How Castle Bespoke Flooring is Preserving The Planet

Although our tag line “Planks of Distinction” points to the unique and custom design aspects of Castle Bespoke, our planks are also distinctive in that they express cutting edge best practice methods that are easy on the natural environment.

• Live sawn oak: Our oak is milled with a process called live-sawing. This milling practice achieves a higher yield milling, when compared with other more selective milling methods, such as the pie cutting method, where logs are cut on different angle to try and capture the most rift or quartersawn, resulting in lower yields of lumber per log.
• Engineered Structure: We use a 6 mm (or 4mm in our Mainstreet line) wear layer of oak. This provides solid oak down to just above the tongue and groove structure. Even with a solid plank, you can only re-sand down to the tongue and groove part of the plank. What this means is that we provide EQUAL AMOUNT OF SANDING LIFE as a solid plank, but with only 1/3^rd the amount of Oak. Think about that… what if we stopped using solid, and reduced oak logging by 2/3^rd?!
• Baltic Birch Substrate: The bottom part of the plank is made from faster growing softwood called Baltic Birch. These laminations are peel-cut, and glued together. We use CARB compliant plywood. FSC also available on request.
• Because our planks are largely stocked as unfinished product, we have virtually zero dead stock. We custom hand-oil finish on a per-order basis using mostly zero VOC penetrating natural oils. This drastically reduces our environmental footprint. Meaning that we do not have to hold massive stock of wide range of colors. Instead, our method of holding only several styles, and offering custom finishing, assures the ability to create a custom floor that is uniquely you, while retaining relatively minimal amounts of stock.
• If a client has a specific health concern, or durability concern, we can adjust the finishes that we use to pre-finish, allowing complete peace of mind, and the ultimate in custom.
